Instagram bio: ideas and a structure that works

Updated: August 2026

You get 150 characters and about 3 seconds of a visitor's attention: the bio decides whether someone taps "Follow" or leaves. Here is the structure growing accounts use, plus ready-to-adapt ideas.

The 4-line structure

  1. Who you are / what you do β€” clarity before wit: "Travel photography" beats a beautiful metaphor nobody decodes.
  2. What followers get β€” "15-minute recipes", "One Excel trick a day".
  3. Personality β€” one line that is yours: humor, city, quirky fact.
  4. Call to action β€” pointing at the link: "πŸ‘‡ New video", "Book here".

Formatting tricks

  • Line breaks: write the bio in your notes app with the breaks and paste it; the app sometimes won't let you add them directly.
  • Emojis as bullets: one per line, at the start, makes the bio scannable. More than 5-6 total gets cluttered.
  • Keyword in the "Name" field: that field IS searchable: "Lucy | Easy recipes" gets found by people searching recipes, not just people searching Lucy.
  • One strategic link: if you need several, use Instagram's multi-link feature or a link page β€” but send people to what matters most right now.

Frequently asked questions

What should a private personal account's bio say?

Whatever you want acquaintances to see when they request to follow: one line of humor or your city is enough. On private accounts the bio is your only visible "business card", so at minimum it should confirm it's you.

How do I add line breaks to an Instagram bio?

Write the bio in your notes app with line breaks and paste it into the bio field. On many phones the return key doesn't show while editing the bio, but pasted text keeps its breaks.

Do hashtags in the bio do anything?

Bio hashtags are tappable but don't surface you in hashtag searches. They only make sense for your own branded hashtag. To be found in search, put keywords in the "Name" field.

How often should I update my bio?

The structure can last months; the call-to-action line should update with every launch or new piece of content ("New video πŸ‘‡"). A static bio with a dead link is the mark of an abandoned account.
